August 2017 Update

I hope that your summer has been going well. I missed the start of monsoon for the first time in 20 years because I was on the East Coast. But wow, we got some great storms here at the house and that made me so happy! The local school district started today, so I guess that means summer is over. Ha, tell that to the weather.

Right now, in my daily practice I am focused on techniques that nourish and cool. Think restorative postures and breathing practices, as well as quiet time. As we start edging towards the end of summer, we want to cool and soothe, and build up the digestive fire. In Ayurveda it is said that summer bakes on the ama (undigested food, emotions, thoughts, and experiences). We don’t need that going into fall. Try adding a little ginger to your diet, drinking 8 ounces of lemon water 20 minutes before eating, apple cider vinegar in the morning before you eat, and not eating after the sun goes down. These tips will help your digestion which is at its lowest point in its year-long cycle. If we don’t support our digestion, all of those experiences will be hanging around, undigested, to trip us up. Who needs that?

Some nice offerings coming up. I am leading an online course for LifeForce Yoga on mudras, hand gestures, to manage mood and energy. We start on Wednesday. There is a coupon below for a 10% discount. I am part of the sacred business summit, which is free to attend. It is in progress, but there is still time to join. If you are in Tucson, I hope to see you at this month’s mantra class, or in any other class.

“Thought is both force and motion. Thought is dynamic. Thought moves. Thought decides the future. As you think, so you become.”
-Swami Sivananda

Hand gestures, called mudras, can change the breath and energy states. They are a yoga practice that is portable and mudras can be practiced anywhere, anytime. Every individual receives the effect of the mudra in a similar way, while subtle differences may be present. These hand gestures have a long tradition of practice within yoga and Buddhism. Mudras exist within Western culture, too, such as the peace sign, the OK sign, and even that hand gesture that we use when driving to signal anger and aggression.
In this powerful four-week online program, experience the influence of mudras on your mood state. Each week has a different theme with 4 – 5 different mudras. These mudras are categorized for ease of teaching. However, you may find a mudra to be profound when you do not expect it.
During this webinar series, you will:
  • learn the origin and basics of mudra,
  • experience changes in your breath and energy,
  • practice visualization (bhavana), sound (mantra) and meditation with mudra, and
  • receive a manual and recording for home practice

Yoga of Sound: Mantra

Mantra is a big part of my personal practice and has been for many years. Sharing mantra is one of my joys in life because of how it helps keep me calm, centered, and focused. August’s class focuses on The Gayatri Mantra – the great mantra that honors the light within. We will also learn the mudras, hand gestures, that accompany this mantra.

The practice of mantra/chanting focuses the mind, prepares one for meditation, and reconnects us with the eternal cosmic vibration. Through the hidden power of mantra, we will explore and cultivate specific attributes. We will practice Sanskrit mantras that are devotional and non-devotional. We will also practice yogic breathing and meditation. All are welcome, no prior experience is needed.

Friday, August 4, 6:30-8p
